(Vatican Radio)There has been continuing reaction to the Irish Government’s 2014 budget
which this week saw spending cuts and tax rises worth 2.5 billion euro. Some social
welfare benefits were affected as well as allowances for the elderly in a bid to make
savings. The Catholic Primary Schools Management Association is one of the organizations
that has responded to the Budget. Its new General Secretary, Fr Tom Deenihan spoke
to Lydia O’Kane about the budget saying, that while the CPSMA welcomed aspects of
it, certain issues still need to be addressed. “I think one would have to look
at it is terms of the positives and the negatives” He goes on to say that while his
organization welcomes the investment in the establishment of book rental schemes,
due to the high cost of books, other issues such as the restoration of grants to fund
essential maintenance costs in primary schools need to be looked at. Listen
