Pope Francis names Bernard Hebda as Coadjutor Archbishop of Newark


(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis on Tuesday named Bernard A. Hebda as Coadjutor Archbishop of Newark in the U.S. He is currently serving as Bishop of Gaylord.

Aged 54, Bishop Hebda was ordained a priest in 1989 after studies at Harvard University, Colombia Law School, Saint Paul Seminary in Pittsburgh and the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He was appointed Bishop of Gaylord in Michigan in 2009.

The new Coadjutor Archbishop of Newark serves on a number of Committees of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), including the Committee on the Protection of Children and Young People and the Committee on Canonical Affairs and Church Governance. He is also a member of the Executive Board of Caritas Internationalis. In addition to English, he speaks Italian and knows Latin, French and Spanish.
