Vatican City, 20 August 2013: Pope Francis condoled the death of Assunta Sodano, the
sister of Angelo Sodano, dean of the College of Cardinals. In his condolence message
the Pontiff assured his spiritual closeness to the family at this hour of trial and
prayed to the Lord, the giver of all rewards, to receive the departed soul in eternal
joy. As a sign of his participation in the great pain at the loss, Pope Francis
sent his special apostolic blessing to Cardinal Sodano and his family.
Cardinal
Angelo Sodano has been Dean of the College of Cardinals since 2005. He was Cardinal
Secretary of State from 1990 to 2006, under both popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI.
On 27 April 2005, he was elected to succeed Benedict XVI as Dean of the College of
