Christians attacked by Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt
August 19, 2013 - At least 58 Christian churches, schools, institutions, homes and
shops have been attacked, looted and torched as of Saturday in Egypt by the Muslim
Brotherhood and supporters of Mohamed Morsi, the former Egyptian president who was
deposed on 3 July by the military. On August 14 the army forcibly evicted two sin-in
protests by the group which resulted in over 600 dead and thousands injured. In a
backlash after the violence, members of the Muslim Brotherhood attacked Catholic,
Orthodox, Evangelical churches as well as the homes and shops of Christians. AsiaNews
on Saturday carried a list of Christian churches, institutions and properties targeted
by Muslims, furnished by the Press Office of the Catholic Church in Egypt. Pope Francis
on Thursday voiced his grief at the “painful news” of more than 600 deaths and numerous
attacks on Christian churches in the wave of violence in Egypt. “I wish to ensure
my prayers for all the victims and their families, the injured and all those who are
suffering,” the Pope said, urging prayers for peace, dialogue and reconciliation in
Egypt and throughout the world.
