August 15, 2013: Dilip Sigh Judeo, who shot into political prominence with his 'Ghar
Vapsi' campaigns for re-conversion of Christians into Hindu fold, died in a private
hospital in New Delhi on Wednesday after a protracted illness. He was 64.
Chhattisgarh
BJP government has declared a three-day mourning over the death of the party leader
from August 16 to 18. The last rites of Judeo, member of a former royal family, will
be performed with state honors.
Judeo, who represents Bilaspur constituency
in the Lok Sabha, was suffering from liver and kidney complication and was undergoing
treatment at a Gurgaon hospital for the last two months. Judeo's ghar vapasi (homecoming)
movement claimed to bring Christians "back to" Hinduism, which it said had been their
original religion.
Several such ceremonies have taken place since the movement
began more than two decade ago. Media reports often describe them as stunts for political
gains. Such events, Christian leaders have alleged, help people get "headlines in
print and visual media," so people with election-ticket aspirations often organize
such ceremonies to put themselves in the limelight. (Source: UCAN)
