(Vatican Radio) For centuries the sanctuary of St Patrick on the island of Lough Derg
in the north of Ireland has been welcoming pilgrims for a period of prayer and reflection.
In this Year of Evangelization, this place of pilgrimage in Co Donegal has been inviting
people to come and express and celebrate their faith. “The website on Lough Derg
has proposed that we might look at some pilgrims’ stories …” says Fr Robert McCabe,
Chaplain to the Irish Defence Forces, who has also made numerous trips to the island. “Many
people”, observes Fr Robert, “who come to Lough Derg, they come for a sense of connecting
with the faith of (St) Patrick, that this is a place of robust tough prayer” Nearly
two million people from Ireland and abroad over the last 150 years have made the three
day pilgrimage which involves walking barefoot, and fasting. Listen to Lydia O’Kane’s
