(Vatican Radio) Argentina's President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner is facing a tough
political challenge which could affect her efforts to contest the top job for an unprecedented
third time. Sunday's primaries will clearly show President Fernandez if she has got
a problem on her hands. Former Cabinet Chief Sergio Massa and a group of rebel Peronists
who've broken away from the fold, are mounting a strong challenge in these elections.
If Massa and his supporters win, this could spell two pronged political trouble for
Cristina. They can and will challenge her policies. Even more significantly, however,
she needs a two thirds majority in Congress to push through legislative amendments
to the Constitution to seek a third term in 2015. Political rebels from within will
fatally weaken and destroy that plan. More than 30 million Argentines vote to
choose candidates for 127 seats in the lower House and 24 seats in the Senate. This
is going to be a significant test of political strength and will.
