(Vatican Radio) More than 20 United States embassies and consulates will shut down
on Sunday in connection to a worldwide travel alert effective through the month of
August. The travel alert was issued on Friday after the US government received evidence
that al-Qaeda may be planning attacks, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa.
Other countries are responding to the warning by the US about the possibility of an
al-Qaeda attack. European Union Commission spokesman Alexandre Polack said delegations
in the regions where there are security concerns are taking precautions. “We are aware
of the move by the US,” he said, “and we are in contact with our US counterparts.
Delegations of the EU in affected regions are liaising with US Embassies.” “At
this stage we have no evidence that threats concern specifically EU delegations,”
he said, “but we are taking all necessary precautions.” Meanwhile, Britain said
it will close its embassy in Yemen on Sunday and Monday citing security concerns surrounding
this month’s celebration of Ramadan which concludes on the 8th of August. Listen
