Uruguay's
House of Representatives has voted to legalize marijuana, so the legislation now goes
to the Senate. The Government of President Jose Mujica supports legalization and
a regularized system, saying it would decriminalize marijuana. This means that the
Government itself would be responsbible for cultivation, production and sale. up to
40 grams could be bought per month. People would be allowed to grow up to six plants
at home. If this goes through, it would act as an example for many other Latino
nations, who are toying with the same idea. But would be a major headache to Washington,
who's anti drug policy stands against this. On his trip to Brazil his Holiness
has also criticised the notion of legalization.
