(Vatican Radio) The Chief Colombian Government negotiator in peace talks with Revolutionary
Armed Forces of Colombia, FARC, is warning that all acts of violence by the guerrillas
will be held accountable. Listen to James Blears report:
Former
Vice President of Colombia Humberto de La Calle made this statement as the peace talks
resumed in Havana, Cuba. The conflict with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia,
has been dragging on since 1964. Hundreds of thousands of people have died, so accountabilty
would cover thousands of incidents spanning five decades.
The Colombian Government
refuses to accept a ceasfire, during these negotiations. Ten years ago the FARC, used
a ceasfire plus a safe haven the size of Switzerland to rest, re-group, reinforce
and reinvigorate. In this latest war of words, against the backdrop of continued
violence, FARC negotiator Andres Paris, has hit back. He's now questioning whether
the land reform segment of the negotiations, which is supposed to have already been
agreed between the two sides... is valid. This tends to bring into question and could
undermine the entire process. Talks started last November, and the Colombian Government
insists they must be successfully concluded by this November. A lasting settlement
would involve the FARC laying down their weapons and evolving into a political party.
