07 June, 2013 - A photo exhibition in Argentina's capital features 25 images of Jorge
Bergoglio doing pastoral work and conducting religious ceremonies before he became
Pope Francis. Argentine photographer Enrique Cangas shot the images of Bergoglio
between 2003 and 2012, and says many of them show the future pontiff's ``simplicity
and humility,'' as well as his tenacious pastoral work. The photographs are being
shown at the Santa Catalina Monastery in Buenos Aires until June 28. Most are on display
for the first time. Bergoglio was the Archbishop of Buenos Aires before being elected
the spiritual head of the worldwide Catholic Church on March 13. He chose the papal
name Francis, after the popular 13th century Italian saint from Assisi,
known for his humility and poverty. One photo taken during an ecumenical meeting
in Luna Park stadium shows Bergoglio deep in prayer, being embraced by a young evangelical
who prays into his ear. Another photo shows Bergoglio washing the feet of an elderly
woman. Another shows a smiling Bergoglio surrounded by young people at one of the
marches of Corpus Christi. Cangas told The Associated Press on Wednesday that he
hopes to take an even more complete version of the photo exhibit to World Youth Day
in Rio de Janeiro in June, which Francis will attend. (Source: AP)
