(Vatican Radio)The issue of tackling global hunger is taking centre stage on Saturday
in London. Tens of thousands of people are taking part in rallies and Church sponsored
events as part of the Enough food for everyone IF campaign. The campaign is calling
on G8 leaders to take action in order to make hunger a thing of the past. The UK
based Christian Development and Relief Agency Tearfund is one of the 170 organisations
which form part of the IF coalition. Speaking to Lydia O’Kane, Campaigns Manager
Ben Niblett says it beggars belief that in the year 2013 people still don’t have enough
to eat. “…God has provide a planet and has given us a knowledge of how to farm
it, how to make food from it and such a variety and profusion of food that you can
produce in all kinds of different climates and all kinds of different countries and
we still can’t share it properly.” So what is the Enough food for everyone IF campaign
calling on G8 Leader to do? Firstly, it wants to see governments keep their promises
on aid, invest to stop children dying from malnutrition and help the poorest people
feed themselves through investment in small farmers. For governments stop big companies
dodging tax in poor countries, so that millions of people can free themselves from
hunger. To stop poor farmers being forced off their land, and use the available agricultural
land to grow food for people, not biofuels for cars. To force governments and investors
to be honest and open about the deals they make in the poorest countries that stop
people getting enough food. Listen to Lydia O’Kane’s interview with Ben Niblett
