Condition of former Peruvian President worsens

(Vatican Radio) The Family of ailing former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, are appealing to current President Ollanta Humala to officially pardon him, as his health is increasingly frail. Doctors treating Alberto Fujimori say his gastric problems are becoming more severe. He's just been treated for a bleeding ulcer in hospital.

In 2009 he was convicted of ordering a death squad to murder 25 people. as well as the kidnapping of a journalist and a businessman. Since then there have been three more trials, involving accusations of corruption.

Alberto FujimorI was President of Peru from 1990 to 2000. In that time he broke the power of the guerrilla group Shining Path. Obeying his orders, an elite military squad strormed the Japanese Embassy in Lima in 1997, saving hostages and killing all 14 of the MRA guerrillas who'd done this.

If Fujimori's Daughter Keiko had won the Presidentcy in 2011, she would have instantly freed he Father. But she lost in the second round runoff, and now it's up to President Ollanta Humala who defeated her, to either free 74 year old Alberto Fujimori....or keep him behind bars.
