Pope sends message for victims of Texas plant explosion
(Vatican Radio) In a message, Pope Francis has asked that his “heartfelt condolences”
be conveyed to the families of those who died in the explosion at a fertilizer plant
in Texas earlier this week.
Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone issued
the message to Bishop Joe Vàsquez of Austin, Texas, on Thursday.
In it, the
Pope asks that Bishop Vàsquez convey sympathies on his behalf. The Pope also assured
the community of his prayers for those who died, those who mourn and those who continue
to provide care and relief in the wake of the tragedy.
The explosion in the
small Texas town of West on Wednesday killed at least 14 people, wounded more than
150, and levelled dozens of homes.
The complete message to Bishop Vàsquez,
signed by Cardinal Bertone, follows:
“Saddened by news of the destruction caused
by the explosion in West, the Holy Father asks you kindly to convey his heartfelt
condolences to the civil authorities and the afflicted families. He prays for the
eternal rest of the victims and implores God’s blessings of consolation and peace
upon those who mourn and all who generously aid in the continuing work of relief.”
