19 April, 2013 - The Vatican has felicitated the people of the circus on the occasion
of the 4th World Circus Day on Saturday, saying the 3rd Saturday of April
of each year is an extraordinary instrument that invites all to appreciate and deepen
the message of solidarity and brotherhood of which the circus art is a guardian and
witness. Cardinal Antonio Maria Vegliò, the president of the Vatican’s Pontifical
Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People, sent a message to
Dr. Urs Pilz the president of the world Circus Federation, saying he was joining in
the initiative of the World Circus Day that helps society know about the great social,
cultural and anthropological values of circus. He noted that the annual event is
an extraordinary instrument to help all appreciate and deepen the message of solidarity
and brotherhood, whose guardian and witness is the circus art. Cardinal Vegliò expressed
the Church’s recognition for the world’s circus performers and workers, especially
in countries hit by war, violence and natural calamities. The prelate recalled the
welcome give to circus people by Pope Benedict XVI on 1 December, 2012 in the Vatican,
where the Emeritus Pope appreciated their work. Cardinal Veglio also recalled Pope
Francis’ message of hope at the start of Pope Francis pontificate a month ago on March
19.
