Pope’s support for Argentina's Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo
19 April, 2013 - Pope Francis has sent a message of support to the Mothers of the
Plaza de Mayo, an association of Argentine mothers whose children "disappeared" during
the Dirty War of the military dictatorship, between 1976-1983. In his message to Hebe
de Bonafini, the president of the Argentine group that was formed in 1977, the Pope
said he shares their sorrow, and that of “the many mothers and families who have and
are suffering the tragic loss of their loved ones at this moment in Argentina’s history.”
The papal message was a response to a letter in which Hebe de Bonafini encouraged
the Pope to support the fight against poverty and injustice. The Mothers of the Plaza
de Mayo have continued to meet weekly in the public square outside the “Pink House”
that is the seat of Argentina’s government, calling attention to the thousands of
people who died under the state terrorism of military ruler Jorge Videla. (Source:
