(Vatican Radio)Mexico’s Vice-Minister for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights, Ambassador
Juan M. Gomez-Robledo was in Rome this week for consultations with the offices of
various international agencies based in the city, as well as for meetings with officials
in the Roman Curia. He visited Vatican Radio to talk about the relationship between
the Holy See and his country. ”You know, the Holy See is a very active Observer at
the United Nations and also at the Organization of American States,” he explained,
adding, “and we do work together on a variety of topics,” ranging from disarmament
to migration and development. Listen to Mexican Vice-Minister for Multilateral
Affairs and Human Rights, Ambassador Juan M. Gomez-Robledo's extended conversation
with Vatican Radio's Chris Altieri:
“We do sit
together on a regular basis to review things that are on the agenda at the UN and
to plan for future cooperative action.” Gomez also explained that his most recent
trip to the Vatican included meetings with the Secretary for Relations with States,
Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, the President of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral
Care of Migrants and Itinerant People, Cardinal Antonio Maria Veglio, and officials
at the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace.
The Vice-Minister spoke of
what he would be bringing home from these meetings. “[A] sense of the closeness of
the ties,” between the Holy See and Mexico,” he said, as well as, “a commitment to
continue working together and consulting each other on issues that need to be further
discussed at the UN – where in certain areas there is a lack of consensus – this was
also an opportunity to brief the Holy See on Mexico’s improvements in the protection
of human rights, and how we are dealing with our democracy and promoting the rule
of law in Mexico.”
The meetings also offered the occasion to express Mexico’s
accomplishments in the economic and international political spheres, as well as the
country’s aspirations. “Mexico wants to be a global player, which takes very seriously
its responsibilities on the global stage,” said Gomez. “This is why we are a very
active participant at the UN. We recently were an elected member of the Security Council,
and we want to continue playing a role.”
