05 April, 2013 - An important event linked to the inauguration of the papacy of Pope
Francis is his installation as the Bishop of Rome, which is scheduled for Sunday evening.
The installation ceremony will take place in the Basilica of St. John Lateran, the
Cathedral Church of Rome Diocese. On being elected the 266th Pope of the Catholic
Church on March 13, Argentine Cardinal Jorge Bergolio assumed the name Francis. With
that, as the successor of St. Peter the Apostle, the first Pope and Bishop of Rome,
Pope Francis also became the Bishop of Rome. The inauguration of the pontificate
of Pope Francis was held on March 19, in St. Peter’s Square. The Vicariate of Rome
Diocese issued a note saying Sunday’s installation ceremony will take place at the
start of the Holy Mass, with Pope Francis taking possession of the cathedra or seat
of Rome Diocese. After that some representatives will go up to him and pledge their
obedience and filial devotion to their bishop on behalf of the diocesan community.
Heading these representatives will be Cardinal Agostino Vallini, the Pope’s Vicar
for Rome. Concelebrating with the Pope at the Holy Mass will be Cardinal Vallini,
former Vicar, Cardinal Camillo ruini, members of the diocesan bishops council as well
as members of the council of the diocesan prefect parish priests.
