25 March, 2013 - Pope Francis has sent a message to Rome’s Jewish community wishing
them for their feast of Passover, that commemorates their liberation from slavery
in ancient Egypt as narrated in the Bible. ''May the Almighty who liberated his people
from slavery in Egypt in order to lead them to the Promised Land, continue to liberate
you from every evil and accompany you with his blessing,” the Pope wrote in the message
addressed to Rome’s chief Rabbi, Riccardo Di Segni. Passover this year began on
Monday, 25 March, and will continue until 2 April. While thanking Segni for his presence
at his installation ceremony, March 19, the Pope urged for prayers and assured his
prayers in return, hoping the two communities will grow in mutual esteem and friendship.
