Vatican to issue coins and card for the Pontificate of Benedict XVI


March 23, 2013: The Numismatic Office of the Vatican City will issue a new coin set, consists of 8 coins (2 and 1 Euro, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2, 1 Eurocent), bearing the date “2013”, a Vatican communique revealed on Saturday. The reverse side is common to all, while the obverse shows Pope Benedict XVI, Sovereign of Vatican City State, with the text “CITTÀ DEL VATICANO” or ‘Vatican city state’ and twelve stars.

The Philatelic and Numismatic Office will also issue a Vatican Coin Card n. 4, a blister card showing the “Pieta” sculpture by Michelangelo (work on display in Saint Peter’s Basilica) with a 50 cent euro coin bearing the date 2013 and the portrait of Pope Benedict XVI, the communique added.
