Bishop Johnson Akio Mutek of Torit, South Sudan, dies in Nairobi
The Catholic Bishops conference of Sudan sadly announces the death of Bishop Johnson
Akio Mutek of Torit, who died on Sunday of kidney failure at Aga Khan hospital in
Nairobi, Kenya. According to information provided by the Conference, Bishop Mutek
was rushed to Nairobi after he developed serious kidney complications. He had previously
undergone two kidney transplants in India. He was 55 years old. He was ordained a
priest in 1988, and appointed auxiliary bishop of Torit by Pope John Paul the second
in 1999. Pope Benedict XVI appointed him full bishop of Torit in 2007.
