Indian Christians protest photo-shopped images of Jesus and Mary
March 11, 2013 - An Indian Christian group has protested the use of the pictures
of Jesus and his mother, the Virgin Mary, to depict the faces of Rahul and Sonia Gandhi
with a caption reading, "Italian scam". The photo-shopped image appeared on the
Facebook of the "All India Congress Haters Association". Sonia Gandhi is the Italian-born
president of the Indian National Congress, whereas her son, Rahul, is its vice president.
Sajan George, the president of the Global Council of Indian Christians (GCIC), described
the depiction as the “height of perversion” unbecoming of “the people of this great
nation or members of any religion worth its name, using sacred pictures and symbols
to settle political scores, whatever the extent of hatred with which they are filled
with". "The whole Christian community - he said - is upset by this gesture and together
with the GCIC ask the central government and the state governments to take the necessary
measures to stop these unscrupulous gestures, and to find out who is behind them.
Similar actions can threaten harmony within the community. "
