International women’s day: protecting women’s rights worldwide
(Vatican Radio) Today is International Women’s Day celebrated each year on March 8th
in honour of women throughout the world. Each year, the United Nations declares a
theme for IWD. This year’s theme is “A promise is a promise: time for action to end
violence against women.”
Lizzette Robleto-Gonzales is a policy and advocacy
officer for Progressio, a Catholic-rooted humanitarian aid agency. She spoke with
Ann Schneible about this theme chosen by the UN, and the challenge of confronting
violence against women throughout the world.
“It is an important issue for
women around the world,” she said, “especially through the end of 2012 the most horrific
attacks against women and girls.”
“Women represent half of the population around
the world,” Robleto-Gonzales continued, “and they still are seen as second-class citizens.
This needs to be addressed and considered by policy-makers in order for them to develop
their policies accordingly.”
