March 01, 2013 - Emeritus Pope Benedict, who ended his pontificate on Thursday night,
had a very good night’s sleep, said his personal secretary, Archbishop Georg Ganswein.
Vatican Spokesman, Fr. Federico Lombardi told reporters on Friday they spoke to Archbishop
Ganswein in the morning, and he told them that the Emeritus Pope had a very good night’s
sleep. After his resignation came into effect Thursday night, the Emeritus Pope had
dinner, took his regular walk in the palace and watched the TV coverage of his last
day as pope. While spending time in prayer he also read some of the many messages
that have come to him from well-wishers. Friday began with Mass at 7 am followed
by breakfast, and was expected to involve quiet time, as well as a walk on the grounds
of the retreat around 4 pm, during which the Pope was expected to recite his Rosary.
Some of the reading material the Emeritus Pope Benedict has brought with him include
theology, spirituality and history. The retired pontiff who has been playing the
piano in the evenings of late, is likely to return to the pastime in his retirement.
Fr. Lombardi also announced that the Vatican Post Office already ready with the special
postage stamps marking the “Sede Vacante” period. Coins, however, have yet to be minted
and will likely not be ready until May.
