February 15, 2013 - The Catholics of Korea recall the "deep concern" and "constant
efforts" of Pope Benedict XVI who is stepping down on Feb. 28, and resolve to strengthen
their spiritual bonds with him through constant prayer, remembering him as a loving
pastor. Though taken aback by the Pope’s unexpected decision, Bishop Peter Kang
U-il of Cheju, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, released a
message saying, the Korean faithful accept with highest regard the Holy Father’s enlightened
spiritual discernment and courageous decision. He recalled that Pope Benedict has
exerted himself for the Church of the suffering, as well as for peace in Africa and
the Middle East. He has also engaged in interreligious dialogue in an active manner.
The bishop expressed gratitude for the Pope’s prayer and encouragement for the Church
in Korea and for the Republic of Korea on every possible occasion. Bishop Peter particularly
acknowledged Pope Benedict’s “deep concern for the North Korean people in their extreme
destitution and he has spared no effort to provide financial aid for them.” The
head of the Korean Church hoped all Koran faithful will strengthen their spiritual
bonds with him through constant prayer, remembering him as a loving pastor… for good.”
