Pope Benedict XVI appoints a new bishop for the Diocese of Bukoba in Tanzania
Pope Benedict XVI on Tuesday (Jan. 15, 2013) appointed the Bishop of the Diocese of
Singida in Tanzania, Bishop Desiderius Rwoma as the new bishop of Bukoba Diocese.
The pope also named Bishop Rwoma as the Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of
Siginda which is now vacant following his transfer to Bukoba. The appointment came
after the Holy Father accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the Diocese
of Bukoba presented by Bishop Nestorius Timanywa. The bishop tendered his resignation
upon having reached the age limit of 75 years for holding that office as set by the
Code of Canon Law or Church law. The new bishop of Bukoba was born on the 8 May
1947 and was ordained a priest on the 28 July 1974. He was first appoined bishop of
Singida on 19 April 1999 and ordained a bishop on the 11 July of the same year. His
predecessor in the Diocese of Bukoba, Bishop Nestorius Timanywa has been serving as
bishop of the diocese since his episcopal ordination on the 24 February 1974. The
first bishop of the presentday Diocese of Bukoba was the late Cardinal Laurean Rugambwa
who was created a cardinal by Pope John XXIII in 1960.
