(Vatican Radio) In Northern Ireland, The union flag flew over Belfast City Hall Wednesday
following a sixth night of protests. It was the first time the flag was raised since
a decision was taken to limit the number of days it can fly over the building. The
union flag was raised over Belfast City Hall on Wednesday morning to mark the birthday
of a member of the British Royal Family. The controversial decision, taken on December
3rd, to display the flag on designated days only has sparked protests by
those in the loyalist community. They are demanding that the decision be reversed. Robin
Wilson a Belfast based political analyst, says the protests look set to continue."The
situation is set to continue for some time and presumably eventually as with riots
in the past in Belfast eventually this will burn itself out because people can't keep
doing this night after night... but there's no sign of and resolution."
Tuesday
night saw a sixth consecutive night of unrest in the east of the city where police
were attacked with petrol bombs and fireworks. A number of the demonstrations have
resulted more than 100 people being arrested. Dozens of police officers have also
suffered injuries and the cost of policing the protests has run into millions. The
flag was scheduled to be lowered again on Wednesday evening.Listen to Lydia O'Kane's
