(Jan. 02, 2013) “Although the world is sadly marked by tension and conflict caused
by growing instances of inequality between rich and poor, by a selfish and egoistic
mindset and various forms of terrorism and crime, Man is made for peace, which is
God’s gift,” said Pope Benedict XVI. The Holy Father made the remarks in his homily
during a solemn high Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica marking the Feast of the Mother
of God on New Year’s Day, 1st January . The Pope said he is convinced
that the many different efforts at peacemaking which abound in our world, testify
to mankind’s innate vocation to peace. All this the Pope stressed led him to choose
as the theme of his message for the Catholic Church’s January 1ST World
Day of Peace “Blessed are the peace makers for they will be called children of God”.
Referring to the liturgy of the day Pope Benedict called on all to contemplate
the interior peace of Mary, the Mother of Jesus. He said during the days in which
she gave birth to her son, many unexpected things occurred – the search for a place
to stay not finding room at the inn, and so on, but Mary did not get agitated, instead
she pondered in silence, calmly and serenely. The Pope said this is the interior
peace which we ought to have amid the tumultuous and confusing events of the world.
Later, at his first midday Marian Angelus prayer of 2013, the Pope invited everyone
gathered in St. Peter’s Square to ask “Mary, the Mother of God, to bless us, like
a mother blesses her children, who are going on a journey. “A New Year is like a journey
with the light and grace of God”, he said, “May it be a path to peace for every person
and every family, for each country and for the whole world” the Pope concluded .
