International Migrants Day: Spotlight falls on migrant workers
(Vatican Radio) December 18th is UN International Migrants Day which is marked recognize
the efforts, contributions and rights of migrants worldwide. This year attention is
being focused on the plight of migrant workers. Jean-Philippe Cauzy is the spokesperson
for the International Organisation for Migration.
He talked to Lydia O’Kane
about the problems facing migrant worker in the current economic climate, saying “since
2008 we have seen increased stigmatization against migrants mostly due to the economic
downturn in many industrialized countries including here in Europe.”
He also
says that his organization has also seen policies that are restrictive with countries
closing their doors to migrants and political discourse that has been increasingly
