Pope urges govts. to Promote Education with a Sound Anthropology

December 13, 2012: Pope Benedict XVI on Thursday welcomed six new ambassadors extraordinary to the Holy See. At a formal ceremony in the Vatican the Pope received the credentials of the Ambassadors from the Republic of Guinea, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Niger, Zambia, Thailand and Sri Lanka. They are all non-resident Ambassadors to the Holy See.

The Pontiff in his address, thanked the respective heads of state, whose greetings have been convey to the Pope by the Ambassadors before the start of their diplomatic mission at the Holy See. He also prayed to God to grant all their compatriots to lead a peaceful and dignified life in harmony and unity.
By examining the many challenges of our time, we can see that education occupies a prominent place, said the Pope. The changing lifestyles and knowledge creates ruptures in human, cultural, social and spiritual spheres, which are unprecedented in the history of mankind, the Pontiff added.

Social networks, another novelty, tend to substitute natural areas of society and communications. Family and school do not seem to be fertile ground where the younger generations draw their natural lifeblood of their existence. Moreover, academic authority of teachers and professors is questioned in the fields of education. Unfortunately, the competence of some of them is not free of bias and lack of cognitive anthropology, excluding or reducing the truth about the human person.

School and university seem to have become incapable of creating projects with them as a transcendental teleology able to seduce the young people in their inner being, so that they, nevertheless worried about their future, are tempted by the slightest effort, the minimum sufficient and easy success sometimes improperly using the possibilities offered by modern technology. Many would succeed and reach quickly a significant social and professional status while ignoring the training, skills and experience.

The Pontiff urged their governments to contribute to the advance of our humanity with courage, by promoting the education of new generations through the promotion of a sound anthropology, an indispensable basis for any genuine education, and consistent with the common natural heritage.

Pope Benedict exhorted the leaders of their respective countries to have the courage to work on the consolidation of moral authority - understood as a call for a consistent life - necessary for a true and healthy upbringing of the younger generation.

The Pope also conveyed his greeting to the faithful, Bishops and Catholic communities in their own countries. He encouraged their leaders to continue to allow the Church to deal freely with its traditional fields of activity which, contribute to the development of the country and the common good.
