(Vatican Radio) The prime minister of Mali has resigned, hours after being arrested
by soldiers who were behind a military coup in March. Cheik Modibo Diarra was detained
Monday at his home in the capital Bamako, reportedly on the orders of the coup leader
Capt Amadou Sanogo. Meanwhile the entire Sahel region continues to face turmoil. UN
Secretary-General Ban ki-Moon on Monday spoke to the Security Council about the crises
in the region, saying governments and peoples in the Sahel need the full support of
the international community. “The warning lights for the Sahel region continue to
flash, said Ban. He went on to say, “Political turmoil, terrorist activity, drug trafficking
and arms smuggling are spilling over borders and threatening peace and security.”
He concluded saying, “Extreme climatic conditions and fragile economies only add to
this toxic brew of vulnerability.” Listen:
