New poll highlights importance of Christianity in the classroom

(Vatican Radio) A new poll conducted in England shows there is widespread support for teaching Christianity in schools.

The YouGov survey was commissioned by Oxford University’s department of education as part of a new project to support the teaching of Christianity in Religious Education lessons.

The findings reveal that 43 per cent of adults questioned said that more attention should be given to teaching about Christianity in the classroom.
Speaking to Lydia O’Kane Peter Norris, Communications Manager from the UK based Christian Concern says that this survey shows that “Christianity is important to teach children…”
He goes on to says that people see the importance of Christianity, “in terms of understanding British culture and way of life, that clearly came out in the figures but there is also that moral aspect… over half of the respondents thought that Christianity was important to teach because it helps children distinguish right from wrong…”Listen RealAudioMP3
