New poll highlights importance of Christianity in the classroom
(Vatican Radio) A new poll conducted in England shows there is widespread support
for teaching Christianity in schools.
The YouGov survey was commissioned by
Oxford University’s department of education as part of a new project to support the
teaching of Christianity in Religious Education lessons.
The findings reveal
that 43 per cent of adults questioned said that more attention should be given to
teaching about Christianity in the classroom. Speaking to Lydia O’Kane Peter Norris,
Communications Manager from the UK based Christian Concern says that this survey shows
that “Christianity is important to teach children…” He goes on to says that people
see the importance of Christianity, “in terms of understanding British culture and
way of life, that clearly came out in the figures but there is also that moral aspect…
over half of the respondents thought that Christianity was important to teach because
it helps children distinguish right from wrong…”Listen
