FARC unit violates ceasefire, claims it did not know
(Vatican Radio) A unit of Colombia’s main guerrilla group blew up pylons, after their
leaders announced a ceasefire. The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC
unit responsible for the sabotage, insists that the news of the ceasefire hadn't filtered
through to them in time to stop the operation. The ceasefire was announced by Chief
FARC negotiator Ivan Marquez as the peace talks with the Colombian Government were
starting in Havana Cuba. The Colombian Government has refused to take part in the
ceasefire, which the FARC says it will observe until January 20th. The talks are
trying to resolve Land reform and distribution, transforming the FARC into a political
non armed opposition, and rehabilitating its fighters back into ordinary citizens.
The Government is insisting the FARC stops drug trafficking to finance itself and
wants to help the thousands of victims of the 46 year old conflict, many of whom have
lost loved ones and been displaced from the homes and regions.
