(Vatican Radio) Why is there still poverty in the world, and what can we do to fight
it?
This question lies at the centre of “Why Poverty?” – a global media initiative
designed to promote awareness of poverty throughout the world.
The European
Broadcasting Union (EBU) announced November 29 as “Why Poverty? Day” following a month
of media events, such as documentaries, radio broadcasts, and interviews, all exploring
various aspects of poverty and how people are working to combat it.
Vatican
Radio, along with other leading broadcasters such as Steps International, the BBC,
and the DR (Danish Broadcasting Corporation), has been at the forefront of helping
to bring awareness to this issue.
EBU Media director Anika Nyberg spoke with
Vatican Radio about the objectives of this initiative.
“Why Poverty? Day,”
an entire day of programming dedicated to the theme of poverty, is “something we haven’t
seen before, where you can really feel the power of public service broadcasting,”
Nyberg said.
“It will be very interesting to see what kind of effect this
has, whether it actually creates discussion, and whether you can actually see it across
Europe.”
