Breaking the chains of slavery


(Vatican Radio) The Missionaries of Africa, the White Fathers and Sisters as they’re sometimes called, are commemorating the work of their founder, Cardinal Charles Lavigerie, who campaigned tirelessly for an end to the slave trade 125 years ago.
A year long programme of commemorative events opened on Sunday November 11th with a Mass celebrated by Archbishop Michael Fitzgerald at the Church of the Gesù here in Rome. At the same location, a couple of conferences marked the inauguration of a photo exhibition entitled ‘Let us break the chains’.
Among the organisers of these events, aimed at combating modern forms of slavery, is Missionary Sister of Our Lady of Africa, Maggie Kennedy, who is based in Nairobi, Kenya and serves as East African regional superior. She spoke with Philippa Hitchen about her work and about some of the dramatic cases of human trafficking she’s witnessed first hand:
