Rt Rev Justin Welby named new Archbishop of Canterbury
(Vatican Radio) The Rt Rev Justin Welby, currently Anglican bishop of Durham in the
north of England, was named on Friday as the 105th Archbishop of Canterbury. Married,
with five children, Welby worked for eleven years in Paris and London as a senior
manager in the oil industry before pursuing a vocation in the Church. He was ordained
deacon in 1992 and worked for 15 years in the diocese of Coventry, where he became
a leader in the ministry of reconciliation with which Coventry Cathedral has long
been associated. In 2007 he was appointed Dean of Liverpool, while continuing
to do mediation and conflict resolution work overseas, and last year he was made bishop
in Durham, the fourth most senior post in the Church of England. The news of his
appointment to head the Church of England was welcomed by Cardinal Kurt Koch, President
of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity, who said he would
be travelling to England for the installation next year. To find out more about
