Resignation of the Bishop of Ajmer and appointment of successor
November 03, 2012: Pope Benedict XVI has accepted on Saturday the resignation of
Ignatius Menezes, bishop of the diocese of Ajmer, from the pastoral care, in accordance
with the Code of Canon Law. The Pontiff has appointed Father Pius Thomas D'Souza as
the bishop of the same diocese. He is currently the Chancellor of the Diocese of Bareilly.
Father
D'Souza, was born on 4th May 1954, in Bantwal, Karnataka. He studied at
St. Paul's Minor Seminary of the Diocese of Lucknow, continuing his training in philosophy
and theology at St. Charles' Seminary, Nagpur. Father D’Souza holds a doctorate
in canon law from the Pontifical Urban University in Rome. He was ordained a priest
March 28, 1982, for the Diocese of Lucknow. The Diocese of Ajmer (1913), is a
suffragan of the Archdiocese of Agra. It has an area of 146,681 square kilometers
and a population of 17,595,585 inhabitants, of whom 9190 are Catholics. There are
10 parishes served by 43 diocesan priests, 21 religious brothers, 402 sisters and
23 major seminarians.
