After Sandy, 'people need everything,' says Catholic Charities official
November 02, 2012 - The damage from the wind, rain and flooding brought by Hurricane
Sandy "is almost overwhelming," said Msgr. Kevin Sullivan, executive director of Catholic
Charities of the Archdiocese of New York, United States. "We're reaching out to parishes
and getting them to directly assist those in critical need -- they know their own
people and their neighborhoods," he told Catholic News Service on Wednesday. Several
Catholic agencies and religious communities have stepped forward to address the greatest
needs of victims of the killer storm. "Reaching out to parishes and other communities
and neighborhoods is imperative at this point," Msgr. Sullivan explained, adding parish
level response has been tremendous, and they are working closely with other agencies
and NGOs. Catholic Charites USA is accepting cash donations as it is reaching out
to the victims of Hurricane Sandy. Several dioceses across the United States also
have initiated collections of cash and emergency supplies for East Coast storm victims.
