An investigation has been launched after an investigative radio journalist was set
alight in a Bolivian border town, by hooded attackers, while live on air.
The
attack happened while 78 year old Fernando Vidal was in the middle of his radio show
in the town of Yaculba, which borders Argentina. Four masked individuals burst into
the studio, assaulted him, doused him in gasoline and then set him alight.
Fortunately
the flames were doused quickly, but Mr Vidal suffered burns to his face, body and
arms – but he's recovering well. He's been a harsh critic of cross border smuggling
particularly and perhaps not coincidently petroleum based products. He's also criticised
the regional government for laxness in clamping down on smuggling, which is a highly
profitable illicit industry.
Three men have been arrested and are being questioned.
Although shocked by the incident Mr Vidal is undeterred.
