World Osteoporosis Day is observed annually on October20th, and launches
a year-long campaign dedicated to raising global awareness of the prevention, diagnosis
and treatment of osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease. Organized by the International
Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), World Osteoporosis Day involves campaigns by national
osteoporosis patient societies from around the world with activities in over 90 countries.
One of the IOF’s many initiatives is a global campaign to facilitate the implementation
of coordinated, multi-disciplinary models of care for secondary fracture prevention,
called Capture the Fracture. The campaign was the focus of a press event at Vatican
Radio on Thursday, October 17th. The president of the IOF, John Kanis told
Vatican Radio that the Capture the Fracture initiative is going to be the focus of
IOF efforts throughout the coming year. “We use this as a stepping stone – it is World
Osteoporosis Day – but we reinforce [the theme of the day, Capture the Fracture] throughout
the year.”
