On Thursday, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Archbishop Joseph W. Tobin as the new Archbishop
of Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. Archbishop Tobin has served, since 2010, as Secretary
for the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic
Life.
The Holy Father has also nominated a new Bishop for Saint Paul, Alberta
Canada. Father Paul Terrio, a priest of the Archdiocese of Edmonton, Canada, is Pastor
of Holy Trinity Parish in Villeneuve, and Vocations Director for the Archdiocese.
Biographies Archbishop Joseph W. Tobin
Archbishop Joseph
William Tobin, C.SS.R., was born in Detroit, Michigan, on May 3, 1952. He took temporary
vows in the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (the Redemptorists), on August,
1972 and made his solemn profession four years later. In 1975 he obtained a Bachelor's
degree in Philosophy at Holy Redeemer College in Waterford, Wisconsin, in 1977; a
Master of Religious Education in 1979; and a Master of Divinity (Pastoral Theology)
at Mount Saint Alphonsus Major Seminary in Esopus, New York.
Ordained a priest
on June 1, 1978, he has held the following positions: assistant priest (1979-1984)
and then pastor (1984-1990) of Holy Redeemer Parish in Detroit, Episcopal Vicar in
the Archdiocese of Detroit (1980-1986), and pastor of St. Alphonsus Parish in Chicago
(1990-1991).
In 1991 he was elected General Consultor of the Redemptorist Fathers;
and Superior General in 1997. It was confirmed in the post in 2003. In the same year
he became Vice-President of the Union of Superiors General.
In addition, he
was a Member of the Council for Relations between the Congregation for Institutes
of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life and the International Union of
Superiors General (2001-2009).
He was appointed Secretary of the Congregation
for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life in August, 2010
and raised at the same time to the titular see of Obba, with the title of Archbishop.
He received episcopal consecration on October 9, 2010.
Father Paul Terrio
Father Paul Terrio was born in Montréal, Québec, on May 4, 1943.
In
1966 he obtained his Bachelor of Arts from Concordia University in Montréal. Enrolled
at the University of Montréal in 1970, he obtained a licentiate in theology; and in
1983, his qualification for teaching at Concordia University in Montreal. In 1988
he obtained a Licentiate in Philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.
He
was ordained a priest on May 23, 1970 for the Archdiocese of Montréal.
After
his ordination he held the following positions: assistant priest at the Cathedral
of Montréal (1970-1976) and professor at the College of Montréal (1976-1983) and the
Major Seminary in Brasilia (1983-1994). Later he was pastor of St Peter's Parish in
Villeneuve, Edmonton (1995-2001) as well as Formator at Saint Joseph Seminary, Edmonton
(1994-1997). Since 2002 he has been pastor of Holy Trinity Parish in Spruce Grove,
Edmonton. He has also served a member of the Committee for Training and Education
of Clergy, and Director of the Office for Priestly Vocations in the Archdiocese of
Edmonton.
