World Food Day: former US ambassador discusses progress and challenges
(Vatican Radio) The United Nations designates October 16th as World Food
Day – an occasion to raise awareness about the many approaches to ending hunger. In
the context of the Day, the Executive Director of The Alliance to End Hunger and Former
US Ambassador to the UN institutions in Rome, Tony P. Hall, spoke with us about the
progress and the continuing challenges on the road to achieving a world without hunger.
“There are some very positive things going on,” said Ambassador Hall, citing a reduction
in the global poverty index and the vastly improved ability to respond to food crises
before they become disasters. He also noted that, despite the progress that deserves
to be mentioned and praised, there is still a very great deal to do. “We’ve still
got a billion people [who] are hungry,” he said, adding, “we still haven’t developed
the political will to really end [hunger].” Ambassador Hall is also scheduled to deliver
the George McGovern lecture on “The Changing Face of Hunger” at the Rome headquarters
of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization on October 18th. Listen
