International Symposium on Mary in Rome

(October 5, 2012) A two-day international symposium, dedicated to the study of Mary and her cultural and theological significance throughout history, concluded in Rome on Friday. The objective of the conference on the theme, "Mary, Sign of Faith (and Only Hope)", at Rome’s Russian Ecumenical Centre was to explore the cult of Mary in order to explore her role in leading Christians towards greater devotion to Christ. Participants had the opportunity to hear from a wide variety of experts on issues such as the history of Marian images and the historical person of Mary. Edmund Mazza, history professor at Azusa Pacific University in Los Angeles, California, the symposium’s main organizer said the event was in response to Pope Benedict XVI's call, and was of particular importance in view of the Synod of Bishops on New Evangelization starting on Sunday and the Year of Faith on Thursday.
