(Vatican Radio) Colombia's President Juan Manuel Santos has undergone successful surgery
for prostate cancer. Doctors explain there were no complications during the surgery,
which was done with a local anaesthetic. President Juan Manuel Santos who's family
are with him, is recovering well and will leave hospital within the next two days.
He won't need either chemotherapy or radiation treatment, as the cancer was detected
early and the tumor was small. He will be able to continue work more or less as usual.
But he won't be able to travel for three weeks. President Santos thanked the Colombian
people for messages of support. He said with this encouragement and the help of God,
hopefully the news from his medical team, will continue to be good. Exploratory
peace talks with Colombia's biggest guerrilla group the Revolutionary Armed Forces
of Colombia, better known as the FARC are starting in Norway. The process will then
move on to Cuba. President Santos leadership is very much needed in this delicately
balanced process, which many hope will end a savage conflict, that's been going on
since 1964. Listen to this report by James Blears
