Expert to help Holy See 's commitment to fight money laundering

( Sept. 11, 2012) The Vatican has hired an international expert to help in its commitment to fight money laundering, said a communiqué released by the Holy See on Tuesday. The announcement comes two months after the Holy See passed a key European financial transparency test by Moneyval, a European body that monitors money laundering, but the Vatican received poor grades for its financial watchdog agency and its bank. Vatican’s communiqué said the Holy See was not slackening its commitment to Moneyval’s recommendations in the fight against money-laundering, and proof of this, said Vatican’s spokesman Jesuit Fr Federico Lombardi, is the hiring of the services of Rene Bruelhart, a 40-year-old Swiss lawyer renowned for his work against money laundering and financing of terrorism. Bruelhart has already begun work this month, Fr. Lombardi added.
