Imam: War, violence not the answer

Representatives of the world’s religions are meeting this week in Sarajevo, Bosnia, for the 26th International Meeting for Peace. Organised by the Community of Sant’ Egidio, the gathering aims at fostering understanding, reconciliation and co-existence in the “Spirit of Assisi.”

Among the religious leaders at the event is the Grand Imam of the mosque of Lahore, Pakistan, Muhammad Abdul Khabir Azad. He spoke to Vatican Radio about the case of Rimsha Masih, a Pakistani Christian accused of burning the Koran.

“Right now, the case is in progress in the court and we do hope that the results will be very soon there, and we’ll be able to see the facts.” He said “We do hope that all the religious communities in Pakistan, they are supporting the right people and the right thing.”

The Grand Imam said, “So the message for the whole of the people is very simple, that war, violence, is not the solution of all the things. The solution is dialogue, and to come to the table and to understand the things.”
