United States President addresses Democratic Convention in bid for re-election
(Vatican Radio) United States President Barack Obama addressed the Democratic Convention
in North Carolina yesterday in his bid to get re-elected.
Speaking to an arena
audience of 20,000, and to millions of people watching at home, the president asked
Americans for patience in rebuilding the weak economy as he appealed for a new term
in office.
“I won’t pretend the path I’m offering is quick or easy,” he said,
saying that more than a few years will be needed to “solve challenges that have built
up over decades.”
The president continued by saying that confronting these
problems will “require common effort, shared responsibility, and the kind of bold,
persistent experimentation that Franklin Roosevelt pursued during the only crisis
worse than this one.”
With just two months before election day, Obama needs
to win over undecided voters, especially those who had been swayed by his inspiring
message of hope and change in 2008, but have grown disillusioned after years of economic
weakness and persistent political bickering.
