Vatican denies more than 2 suspects in Vatileaks case
(Aug. 29, 2012) The Vatican on Wednesday denied media speculation that there are
more than two suspects involved in stealing and leaking confidential Vatican documents
in what has come to be known as “Vatileaks”. “The news circulating these days that
there are some twenty or more suspects in the leaking of confidential Vatican
documents is unfounded,“ Fr. Ciro Benedettini vice-director of the Holy See’s Press
Office told reporters. Paolo Gabriele, former butler of Pope Benedict XVI was arrested
last May for aggravated theft of confidential documents that allege corruption and
power struggle in the Vatican. A Vatican magistrate on Aug. 13 ordered the layman
to stand trial for the charges. The Vatican also charged a second layman, Claudio
Sciarpelletti, who worked in the Vatican Secretariat of State, with involvement in
the case. Sciarpelletti, a computer expert was ordered to stand trial, although on
lesser charges of aiding and abetting Gabriele. The trial is not expected before
the end of September.
