(Vatican Radio) The drive for a new evangelisation and the forthcoming Year of Faith
are two interlinked initiatives being undertaken by the Church to revitalise and re-propose
the teachings of Christ in our increasingly secularised contemporary society. Archbishop
William Lori was appointed earlier this year to head the archdiocese of Baltimore,
the U.S.'s oldest Catholic see. He spoke to Vatican Radio's Susy Hodges about these
two issues.
Listen to the extended interview with Archbishop Lori:
Archbishop
Lori says "it's time to rekindle the faith in those countries " that have fallen away
from the faith and he believes the Year of Faith (starting in October 2012) is a "perfect
way to do this." Speaking about the challenges posed by secularism, Lori says
today's culture "excludes religion, ridicules religion and marginalises it."
When
it comes to getting the message of the gospel through to the young, Archbishop Lori
says it's vital to use modern methods of communications to reach them: "If you're
not on Facebook, and if you're not using the social media , you're not going to find
young people where they are." He also said the Church has to create "that space,
those conditions in which the gospel can be heard" in today's society. Everyone,
he says, "has spiritual hungers."
