(Vatican Radio) Sunday is World Humanitarian Day.The day aims to highlight the work
of humanitarian community, and the challenges they face. It also pays respect to those
who have died or been injured in the course of their humanitarian work. Lydia O’Kane
spoke to Humanitarian Director at development organisation CARE International, Barbara
Jackson who says the humanitarian community is working more than ever to help those
in need.
“We recognise this in the humanitarian field that resources are required
to address the frequency of natural and manmade disasters, but also we think it’s
really important to utilize the resources that are available to address some of the
underlying causes.
Many humanitarian workers have given their lives in the
cause of duty. Reflecting on this, Barbara Jackson says their courage and fortitude
should be remembered.
“It is really important to honour their willingness,
their courageousness, their fortitude as they face these challenges, very challenging
situations, so I think we all need to join efforts and hearts and minds on World Humanitarian
Day to remember these individuals but also to remember all of those they have meant
to help.”
She also adds, that it is not only on one day that we need to remember
the humanitarian work that is being done, because the work is ongoing. Listen to Lydia
